What is Addiction?

Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance that can be pleasurable but the continued use or act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control or causing problems for themselves or others. When referring to addiction, it is important to recognize that its cause is not simply a search for pleasure and that addiction has nothing to do with one’s morality or strength of character.

If you had a broken arm, you would seek help immediately. Without hesitation, and no consideration of what others would “think”. And when you got home, you wouldn't “hide out” because of your “condition”. You would just go on with your life, right? But what if a stigma was attached to having a broken bone? What if people at work found out? What will your family think? What if people think you are weak because you chose to have a bone that is broken?

You don't choose to be ill and you didn't choose addiction. But you can choose to be well by seeking treatment.

What Are Opioids?

Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors in the brain to produce morphinelike effects and relieve pain. Examples of legal opioids are painkillers prescribed by a physician. Heroin is an illegal opioid. Prescription and illegal opioids are commonly abused because they are so addictive. Opioid medications bind to the areas of the brain that control pain and emotions. They increase levels of the “feel good” hormone dopamine in the brain’s reward areas and produce an intense feeling of euphoria. As the brain becomes used to these feelings, it often takes more of the drug to produce the same feelings, leading to tolerance, dependence, and addiction.

Why Buprenorphine?

The United States is in the midst of an opioid and heroin abuse epidemic and drug overdoses now exceed the risk of dying from a traffic accident. Most of us know someone who is affected by this, yet only approximately fifteen percent of patients with an addiction to heroin or opioids are in treatment at this time (This is a surprising fact, given that today’s medical interventions are superior to counseling alone and have been available since Buprenorphine was approved for outpatient treatment in 2003. Buprenorphone is now being used as an alternative to methadone and is formulated in several ways, including Suboxone. It represents the latest advance in medicationassisted treatment and allows a holistic approach to the treatment of opioid dependency.
